About the IMC Institute
Appalachian State University has a history of promoting literacy with pre-service teachers and youth. Beulah Campbell was a professor at Appalachian State Teachers College (and later Appalachian State University) from 1957 to her retirement in 1981. During this time, she built a personal collection of picture book art from lecturers and author/illustrators she invited to visit her classes. Her collection of illustrations can be seen in the Beulah Campbell Collection at Appalachian State University Special Collections.
With the work of Beulah Campbell in mind, the IMC faculty librarians established the IMC Institute to provide professional development opportunities for students and area teachers in the spring of 2024. Teaching with high-quality literature and instructional materials has the power to inspire children’s learning and change lives. We aim to offer a series of workshops and professional development opportunities that will raise awareness of the value of youth literature, provide strategies for teaching with youth literature and instructional resources, and empower teachers to utilize inclusive youth media.
